  5. There are millions of
  6. teletext-equipped TVs in Britain, but
  7. few people seem to use the full range
  8. of pages.  Here's a rough guide of
  9. some of the features.
  10.  
  11. There are two main services - CEEFAX
  12. (see facts ...) on BBC1 and BBC2, and
  13. ORACLE on ITV and C4.
  14.  
  15. CEEFAX contains 6 different sections;
  16. News ({6P100-199{7), City Finance
  17. ({6P200-299{7, BBC2 only), Sport
  18. ({6P300-399{7), Breakfast
  19. service/Weekend Columns
  20. ({6P400-499{7), Weather and Travel
  21. ({6P500-599{7, BBC1 only), and TV &
  22. Radio ({6P600-699{7).
  23.  
  24. CEEFAX news is probably as in-depth as
  25. you'll get.  It has sub-sections on
  26. Parliament, Politics and World News,
  27. as well as "Headline" stories.  It is
  28. regularly updated, and usually carries
  29. some sort of in-depth analysis of a
  30. top story.  If you want to find out
  31. what's going on, and you haven't got
  32. an Astra dish, look up CEEFAX.
  33.  
  34. City Finance is great for those
  35. business types with stocks and shares.
  36. (or those who have money in LARD like
  37. Torch!  -Ed!) There are stock market
  38. headlines and stories, and there are
  39. regular updates on the stock exchange
  40. and the FTSE.
  41.  
  42. Sport on CEEFAX is excellant, with
  43. results of all sports.  The latest
  44. score to any soccer game can be
  45. obtained, along with league tables and
  46. forthcoming fixtures.
  47.  
  48. P400-499 are a bit of an oddity.  They
  49. only appear before 9 in the morning,
  50. and at the weekend, when they have
  51. religious crap and shit like that.
  52. Pete Waterman (of S/A/W fame) used to
  53. write a column there, but it hasen't
  54. been seen for ages.
  55.  
  56. The Weather and Travel pages are fine
  57. if you want to know which ferries are
  58. on and which roads are free, but for
  59. weather forget it.  The forcasts are
  60. so vague, it's impossible to deduce
  61. exactly what the weathers going to be
  62. like.  Stick with Micheal Fish.
  63.  
  64. The TV & Radio pages are pretty well
  65. stocked, with previews, forthcoming
  66. film reviews and contact adresses as
  67. well as TV & Radio listings.  Forget
  68. trying to find out what's on ITV,
  69. though.  The ITV regions are split up,
  70. and listed alphabetically.  By the
  71. time you've found your program, it'll
  72. have ended...

  74. The main trouble with CEEFAX is that
  75. it's so damn slow.  You can easily
  76. wait a minute for a page to appear,
  77. and that's on a good day.  CEEFAX
  78. offers no readers pages, being a
  79. purely fact-based service.
  80.  
  81. ORACLE, ITVs rival to CEEFAX, is a
  82. different kettle of fish altogether.
  83. Rather than 6 main sections, it has
  84. several small sections, crammed into
  85. 300 pages on ITV, and 300 on C4.  For
  86. example:-

  88. News ({6P101-118{7) from ITN.  Not a
  89. patch on CEEFAX's; no analysis, no
  90. background, just the headlines and
  91. major stories.  Fine for a quick
  92. update, but for detail, switch to
  93. CEEFAX.
  94.  
  95. Live at Five ({6P120-129{7).  Oh dear.
  96. This is the equivilent of a womans
  97. magazine, with letters page, horoscope
  98. (from Russel Grant - barf), puzzle
  99. page, crossword, and even a problem
  100. page (usually containing a letter
  101. about piles).  It's updated every day,
  102. at 5pm (hence the name).  Read the
  103. problem page for a laugh, otherwise,
  104. forget it.
  105.  
  106. Sport ({6P130-160{7).  Good coverage
  107. in a small area.  Again, not as
  108. in-depth as CEEFAX, but up-to-date.
  109.  
  110. {6P200-249 {7are produced by the
  111. regional television company, and so
  112. contain local information.  This
  113. includes a useful Cinema Guide (see
  114. what's on at the flicks).  The TV
  115. guides are on {6P210-219{7, and are
  116. brilliant.  As this section is again
  117. produced by the regional ITV company,
  118. the guide always contain the correct
  119. programs for your region.  Beats
  120. CEEFAX hands down!
  121.  
  122. {6P250-259 {7is a section called
  123. RSVP:Tv, and predictabaly, it's all
  124. about TV.  It has a news page, and
  125. features page, and letters page (full
  126. of complains about censorship,
  127. usually), TV charts, previews and film
  128. reviews.  This sections is usually
  129. guide entertaining, with plenty of
  130. gossip in the news section.  It's
  131. updated every day.
  132.  
  133. {6P300-399{7 are all holiday adverts.
  134. If you've got the money, and are
  135. looking for a holiday, look here.
  136.  
  137. {3C4's {5pages contain even more ...
  138. {7
  139.  
  140. {6P401-499 {7are run by a seperate
  141. company, {44-Tel{5 (ho ho).  {7It's
  142. all about C4 programs, and the
  143. coverage is here is absolutely
  144. brilliant.  Almost EVERY program
  145. that's on C4 carries a seperate page,
  146. describing the program.  What's more,
  147. {6P419 {7contains details of the
  148. program that's on at that moment.
  149. Every switched on, and thought "What
  150. the fuck is this?".  Dial {6P419{7,
  151. and find out!
  152.  
  153. {6P540-549{7 are the music pages, Beat
  154. Box.  This is a daily updated section,
  155. and is excellent for keeping
  156. up-to-date with the music sections.
  157. There is a news & gossip page, a
  158. lively letters page, reviews of
  159. singles and albums (usually written by
  160. arsehole Jon Homer), a readers review
  161. page, a specialised page that changes
  162. each day, charts (network),
  163. competition, and the fastest gig guide
  164. available.
  165.  
  166. {6P560-569{7 is {2Buzz{7, a daily
  167. teenage magazine (updated at {44pm{7).
  168. Some of the things in this section are
  169. quite good, such as the {5Letters
  170. {7page (most of the messages are
  171. phoned in).  The good news is that
  172. there is a computer section, }1FX.
  173. {7The bad news is that it's the worst
  174. ever.  Starting with the {4Gallup
  175. chart{7, it then reviews a game,
  176. getting the verdict totally wrong.
  177. Then we get a bit of months-old news
  178. e.g.{5 Robocop 3 {7has an
  179. impossible-to-crack dongle protection
  180. system (!).  Then comes the final bit
  181. - the {3tips{7.  Oh dear.  They're
  182. wrong, they're old, they've all been
  183. seen before.
  184.  
  185.  
  186. After 9pm, {6P568 {7contains Debbie's
  187. Diary.  This is supposedly 3 pages
  188. from a 15-year-old girls diary, every
  189. night.  It is pretty hopeless - it
  190. used to be on from 4pm, but parents
  191. complained when words like "willy" and
  192. "virgin" appeared on their screen, so
  193. the ITC restricted it.  Every other
  194. week, Debbies brother, Josh takes
  195. over, and we get the slaverings of a
  196. 13-year-old pervert.  Read it if you
  197. get a chance, it's a laugh (though not
  198. always intentionally...)
  199.  
  200. {6P620-629 {7are the Reviews.  This is
  201. news and reviews of the latest film
  202. releases, as well as videos (rental
  203. and retail).  There is also books and
  204. thearter, if that's your thing.
  205.  
  206. C4 pages include other sections,
  207. ranging from religious comments and
  208. knitting columns to racing and
  209. financial news (not as good as
  210. CEEFAX's, though).e
  211.  
  212. The main advantage with ORACLES ITV
  213. and C4 pages is that everythings much
  214. quicker.  Pages appear in half the
  215. time it takes CEEFAX to get them on
  216. screen.  ORACLE also makes much better
  217. use of the FASTEXT system, when four
  218. coloured "signposts" appear at the
  219. bottom of the screen.  Pressing the
  220. corresponding coloured button on the
  221. keypad takes you to the designated
  222. place, saving time.
  223.  
  224. So in general, if you want a fast
  225. update on TV schedules or the news, or
  226. fancy reading much more "magaziney"
  227. type pages, try ITV & C4.  On the
  228. other hand, if you only want facts,
  229. use CEEFAX.  It's slower, but
  230. superior.
  231.  
  232. P.S.  A small tip for Astra satellite
  233. owners.  If Sky News isn't enough for
  234. you, you can now pick up CNN
  235. International.  It's on channel 28
  236. (for Amstrad owners, anyway), around
  237. 1623.  It's bloody brilliant!

  239. (If you can't be bothered to read the
  240. Diary pages or don't have teletext,
  241. don't despair!  Good old Tanty has
  242. typed them out for you because we're
  243. so short of articles this issue!
  244. They're on the next page!  And, going
  245. over to satellite:  CNN have been
  246. transmitting on Astra for only a few
  247. weeks now.  If you've buggered around
  248. with your Amstrad receiver (been
  249. clever by putting Sky One on channel 1
  250. etc.) then you probably won't have it.
  251. Tune your receiver to 1621Ghz and
  252. select vertical polorisation.  -Ed)
